TLV2371, OPA2364: IEC 16000-4-2 ESD Standard

Hi,

We are using TLV2371DBVR and OPA2364 opamps in our design.

I would like to know if the Output of the Op-Amp can withstand ESD test according to IEC 16000-4-2 standard, which is +/- 4000V Contact charge and +/- 8000V Air Discharge. Output of the Op-Amp directly connected to pin without any components in series or parallel.

What will be the way to protected Output of the Op-Amp or is there Different Op-Amp Certified with IEC 16000-4-2 Standard?

Hi Jitsu,

as far as I know no usual OPAmp can directly withstand the IEC 16000-4-2 without using additional protection circuitry. Very probably you will need to absorb the ESD by a TVS which you directly connect from the output pin to signal ground. Use an unipolar TVS, if your OPAmp is powered by a single supply voltage and use a bipolar TVS when using a bipolar supply voltage.

Keep in mind, that TVS can come with lots of junction capacitance, which can destabilize the OPAmp by ording the phase margin. So, either you choose a low capacitance TVS or you modify your OPAmp circuit by introducing a dual feedback topology as discussed here:

Hi Jitsu,

8kV and 4kV are higher than we are testing our op-amps at this point. TI does have some ESD parts that you can look at, they might be able to provide the protection you're looking for:

Thank You Kai and Paul for your reply.

What will be the safe current limit on FETs Body diode (Output Pin)? That will determine value of the Output resistor to limit current . We are using 3.3V Single supply Voltage for Op-Amp.

Is there any recommended TVS diode? If the ESD test is ±4kV, do we need Unipolar or Bipolar TVS?

Hi Jitsu,

We recommend limiting the current to 10mA on any of the op-amp pins if the ESD cell is activated.
