TLC2272: Input Protection

Part Number: TLC2272
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA196

Dear Team,

we understood from some E2E posts that the TLC2272CPW has some advanced ESD at the inputs. Our customer has some questions about the internal clamp diodes:

  1. Does the TLC2272CPW have internal clamp diodes on the input? (suppose yes because of ESD tolerance)
  2. Could we also use these to clamp the input signal by limiting the current with an resistor?
  3. If so what is the maximum allowed current througt the internal clamp diodes?

And also an additional question from my side:

4. The part is already a bit older - do you have a recommendation of a newer part in this category?

Thanks and best regards
Martin

  • Please see my comments below:

    1. Does the TLC2272CPW have internal clamp diodes on the input? (suppose yes because of ESD tolerance).  Yes.  There are reverse-biased ESD protection diodes between each I/O pin and both supplies.
    2. Could we also use these to clamp the input signal by limiting the current with an resistor?  Yes. But since doing so will violate the input common-mode voltage linear range, you should expect some delay in response.
    3. If so what is the maximum allowed current througt the internal clamp diodes?  The maximum dc current thru ESD protecton diodes is 5mA - see below.  For short pulses (few microseconds or less), max current may be 10x higher.
    4. The part is already a bit older - do you have a recommendation of a newer part in this category?  For alternative part, please take a look at OPA196.

  • Hi Marek,

thanks for the reply & the new device recommendation. I will discuss it with the customer.

    Best Regards
