TLV272: Check for damage

Dear all：

       I have operational amplifier TLV272 use question.

For example, I have two damaged TLV272 and one brand new TLV272.Can damage be detected by multimeter test without power on?
What are the causes of damage to the operational amplifier?

    Hi Timsen,

    To determine if a device is damaged we usually follow the below process.

    1. Visual Inspection - Here we look to see if the package of the device has been cracked or is missing a piece of the package. If the device is extremely overstressed damage to the packaging can occur. If you find damage you can stop here and assume the device will not function properly.

    2. Curve trace all diodes - Most amplifiers will have internal ESD diodes from the input pins to the power supplies and the output pin to the power supplies. There may also be diodes between the inputs of the op amp depending on the device. To determine if damage has occurred to any of these diodes we run a curve trace on the diodes. Damage can occur to the diodes of too much current (typically >10mA) flows from the input/output to the supplies. This can happen when the input voltage exceeds the supply voltage and turns on the diode or if an input voltage is present with the supply voltage off.

    3. Test the specifications - If an op amp passes the first two steps then we will run it through our automated test equipment (ATE) to see if the op amp is still within spec.

    Damage often occurs when an op amp is exposed to ESD or EOS. I recommend watching out TI Precision Lab videos of ESD and EOS for more information.
