OPA462: Power Amplifier with 170Vpp & 2A capability

Part Number: OPA462

Customer is looking for Power Operational Amplifier with Power Bandwidth of 170 Vp-p @ Minimum 1MHz and Maximum Steady state current (within SOA) of +/- 2A.

OPA462 meets most of the specs except output current.

Do you have any other recommendation for customer specs ?

  • Hi Prahlad,

The first thing to consider is the slew rate (SR) required for these output conditions. Applying SR = 2 pi (f) (Vpk), the required SR = 6.28 (1e6)( 85) = 534 V/us. The OPA462 SR is typically 25 V/us so it isn't a candidate just from a SR consideration. TI does have High-Speed Amplifier Op amps with slew rates much greater than 500 V/us, but they are not very high voltage Op amps like the OPA462.

The specified requirements of this application suggests a true RF amplifier solution is needed, one capable of providing 85 Vpk at 1 MHz. A low-voltage, High-Speed Op amp might serve as a driver, but then a discrete bipolar or MOSFET power output stage consisting of RF devices would be used to develop the high-voltage, high current output.

  • Hi Prahlad,

Have you been able to find a satisfactory solution? Can this e2e thread be closed now?

  • Those are quite the requirements Prahlad,

You might look at the PA107 from Apex,

I have been doing some sims with this one, here is a TINA file to start with,

    3343.PA107 gain of 20 100V step.TSC
