Current sense solution for motor driver

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV8436E, INA186, INA240

Hi Amp team,

In case of customer want to monitor the motor current by MCU,

We are recommending sense resistor in series with the motor coil winding between H-bridge as current monitor solution to my customer.

Latest our motor driver have integrated current sense for current control (for example 2ch DRV8436E).
PGND current sense is not acceptable, because it is connected to other internal circuit.

Could you please give me your recommended current sensing solution?

I will propose the following device. However, it may be over spec(little bit expensive).
Customer want to use the general opamp as possible. (please let me know the schematics for bi-directional current sense solution with general opamp)

Conditions

VM=24V

IM= max 3~4A (Bi-directional current)

  • Hello Muk,

    Thanks for asking your question on the forum.  I do not have good solution here that cost less.  The reason is that the input of the current sense amplifiers will go through large changes of common mode voltage causing issues during this transitions.  The INA240 is meant to deal with these large transitions and is normally the best option and what we recommend for these applications.
