INA226-Q1: Sensed Current Range

Genius 4840 points
Part Number: INA226-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA226

Can customer use INA226 at following condition ?

Supply Voltage:12V

Shunt resister:25uOhms

They would like to measure Current up to 30,000A.

We found Sensed current range in below error analysis is up to 100A.

Please give us your comment.

  • Hi,

The INA226 shunt voltage measurement range is ±82mV, which translates to 3.28KA peak current with a 25uΩ shunt.

For error simulation, what matters is shunt voltage which equals to current X resistance. The absolute values of current or resistance don’t matter. Therefore we can scale them proportionally to fit into the calculator.

The above condition is equivalent to Shunt=2.5mΩ and current=0 to 32.8A. All you need to do is plugging these numbers into the calculator, just remember to multiply X-axis by 100 to reflect the actual current magnitude.

  • On additional point to keep in mind, is that the shunt resistor will have to be able to dissipate the I2R power.  To measure  30,000A, the shunt would need to be ~ 2.7µΩ; which is means supporting ~ 2.5kW.
