INA226 max. operating current

Part Number: INA226
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: INA226, INA220, INA210

Hello team,

I have a quick question in regard to normal operating current of INA226. I'm trying to know this information to estimate IC's power consumption.

I believe Iq 420uA from datasheet is normal operating current, thereby power consumption can be estimated in Vs * Iq. Please correct me if any misunderstanding here.

The reason why I'd like to double-check this information is as following. There is quite a gap between the Iq of INA226 and INA220. The capture below is from INA220 datasheet, saying Iq of 1mA, which is quite larger than 420uA. 1mA is plausible for me, and I wonder whether 420uA of low operating current is simply because INA226 is a power consumption improved device.

Thank you!

  • Minkyung,

Your understanding is correct. INA226 is a newer revision of our digital power monitors and enjoys better performance over the INA210. The quiescent current is as you say normal operating current, but there are a few additional things to watch out for:

    - there is also a low power mode value that can be applied. If you are trying to save energy, you can cycle between these 2 modes, and your power would then be Vs*Iq,active*%time active + Vs*Iq,shutdown*%time shutdown. The percentages should add up to 100%.

    - the Iq listed in the datasheet is for a specific set of test conditions, but we also perform characterization on some other values. Check out figures 15-18 in the INA226 datasheet for additional information.
