LM2901: temperature pedigree

My customer has the following question:

Can you tell us why LM2901M (-40°C to 85°C) and LM2901D (-40°C to 125°C) have different specified operating temperatures when Reliability and MTBF tests for LM2901M are conducted at 125°C? Also, the power rating on the datasheet for LM2901M discusses derating at a junction temperature at 125°C. Should LM2901M not be operating at temperatures above 85°C?

National Semiconductor designed the LM2901-N for 85 °C. This device exists to support old National customers, so the specification was never changed, even if TI does more rigorous tests.
