upgrade for opamp

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA2604, TLE2072, TLE2064, OPA827, OPA627, OPA2132

Please, with sugar on top, Can anyone please recomend a drop in replacement for the tlo72cp and the opa2604, something which does not require additional work on the surrounding components, the very best upgrade option please.

 Many thanks. Mark.

  • I've been using the TLE2072 with great results in guitar amplifiers. You need to upgrade them all to really realize the sonic benefits. I put a set in an SWR California blonde and it really smoothed it out. It cleans up gravelly vocals. I put a set in an old Peavey Combo 300. The customer said it only sounded good turned way up and now it has good sound at lower volumes. I don't have good ears, but even I can tell the difference. It's great to have hi-end plug-in replacements like these. I use the TLE2072CP in an 8 pin dip from Mouser for about $2.75. They have higher grade ones with better sensitivity. Their excalibur versions are about $5.00 each. They aren't listed in the catalog, but you can order them online at mouser.com.

The OPA2604 is already a great unit. You can try the TLE2064 but its probably the same performance.

PS I have substituted TLO and TLE chips for 4558, 1458, and 5532 chips in many different guitar amplifiers with no problems.

  • Hi. Many thanks for the reply.

Okay you gave a few possiblilities could you possibly single one out as the best which one has that wow! factor . What do you think of the opa627 now known as opa827, i have heard some very good comments about this opamp would it be voltage / pin for pin compatable

The thing i do not  like about the opa2604 it only sounds good at high volumes which can be a little inconvenient late at night also it doesn't excite me, makes me feel there is a substantial room for improvement. It doesn't have that etheral quality or super smooth sweeping soundstage or suddeness / impact that top end equipment can give.

      Many thanks. John.

  • Hello Mark,

The OPA827 is a single amplifier, therefore it is not a pin compatible device.

  • I replaced an OPA2604 with an OPA2132 on the output of a preamp driving 5m of coax ( through 100R resistors I think). The bass became very solid,  apparently louder and there seemed to be less muddle in the midrange. It may not be the absolute best but for me it is a significant improvement.  Also I think that OPA2132 is tolerant of less than ideal circuit layout although you need to check that you have 0.1uF ceramic or poly caps decoupling the power close to the opamp.
