TLV9054: DC input under no power condition

Hi Team,

One quick question.

I understood that TLV9054 will not get damage when applying beyond 0.5V if the input current is restricted less than 10mA from the following description though, is my understanding correct?

(2) Input pins are diode-clamped to the power-supply rails. Current limit input signals that can swing more than 0.5 V beyond the supply rails to 10 mA or less

In my customer case, two TLV9054 are cascaded, 5V power supply for 1st stage and 3.3V power supply for 2nd stage.

Due to power sequencing, 5V are start up earlier than 3.3V so 0.6V was observed in TLV9054 input pin until starting up 3.3 following up 5V.  But the input current is restricted 30k ohm series resister(5V / 30k ohm = 0.17mA). My customer would like to get TI's official comment if this use case met Abs max violation or not.

    Hi Takashi-san,

    Technically the customer's application will violate the abs max condition. Since the customer is limiting the current to much less than 10mA I would not expect damage to occur. However, if this condition is expected to occur for a long duration I would recommend adding in some protection diodes. Exposure to abs max conditions for extended periods may affect device reliability. This is stated in Note 1 under the Absolute Maximum Ratings Table in the datasheet.

    Thanks for your prompt response on this.

    OK, I understood that there is some risk on its reliability. But it doesn't make sense for me.

    If there is a concern about reliability, What kind of case is (2) supposed to be?

    Hi Takashi-san,

    If the internal diodes turn on and conduct 10mA or more of current through them a catastrophic failure can occur such as a cracked package or other damage related to an EOS event. Keeping the current below 10mA prevents significant damage like this from occurring. When operating above absolute maximum ratings the amplifier is no longer operating in a linear condition and is being stressed resulting in device reliability issues (Note 1).
