OPA2196: 37V supply, device reliability

Part Number: OPA2196
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA2991

Hello team,

Regarding OPA2196 supply voltage, absolute max rating is 40V and recommended operating range is 36V. Customer would like to know whether there is reliability problem on a device if they use the device above recommended range and below abs max rating, for example 37V supply.

They understand it is out of recommended operating range and performance as opamp is not guaranteed with the supply condition. and they understand we have 40V product such as opa2991, they want to know the topic from their curiosity.

Will the 37V range supply condition affect device reliability?

Best regards,

  • Hi Taketo,

normal operation at 37V supply voltage will not considerably reduce the lifetime of OPA2196, if at all. But keep in mind that output short circuit conditions will become more and more dangerous the higher the supply voltage is, because more heat will have to be dissipated within the OPAmp. So if output short circuits can happen, I would additionally limit the output current by the help of a suited current limiting resistor.

    Can you show a schematic?

  • Hi Taketo-san,

Q: Will the 37V range supply condition affect device reliability?

I agree with Kai's assessment and comments.

It is likely that OPA2196 will be reliable and will not affect the device reliability. However, the published datasheet is verified based on +/-4V to +/-18V or 8V to 36V (exclude 4.5V to 8V operating conditions in the discussion). I will not take a risk to investigate the usage of non-recommended operating conditions. The recommended operating conditions are taken into account various operating conditions and operational safety margins, and IC process limitations, where the published performance specifications are verified.

If a designer is required to have higher operating voltage op amp, I would recommend to use OPA2991 part.

if you have additional questions, please let us know.

    Best,

    Raymond
