TPA2026D2: Audio Amplifier selection

Hello,

We are planning to use two 3 Watt speakers (stereo mode )in our system, and for this, we are planning to use TPA2016 or TPA2026 in our design, which is around 2.8 and 3.2 Watt respectively for each channel.

But as per general design guidelines, it's recommended to use 1.6 to 2 times the audio amplifier of the rated speaker wattage.

So  I want to know if there is any pin-to-pin compatible chip for rated wattage? And what is the recommended part for this kind of design?

  • Hi Ajit,

    Are you planning to  use 4 or 8 ohm speaker? The output power you get also depends on the speaker impedance.
    Another question to narrow down the options, what is your system voltage availability? eg. you have 5V source only? Or some higher voltage is available?

    If you have higher voltage than 5V, like 12 or 15V, you may want to look into higher power amplifiers like TPA31xx
    If you're limited to 5V then you need a boosted amplifier to raise the voltage, in that case I'd like to ask if digital input is an option for your application?

    Thank you for the reply.

    We have both options of 4 and 8 Ohm, we were thinking of starting testing with 4 Ohm so that we can extract maximum power from the system.

    We only have a maximum option of 5 Volt for our system.

    Also, the digital option is not available as the output of the system is differential Analog.

    For completely analog devices I think only TPA2080D1 could bring up more power. Our most recent boosted amplifiers are all digital input.
    You could try either TPA2026D2, TPA2011D1 and TPA2080D1.

    We are already considering TPA2026. will it suffice for 2 speakers of 3 watt each?

    Also, would it work if we use 2 TPA2026 i.e one for each speaker?

  • Hi Ajit,

    Based on TPA2026D2 specs, you should get 3W into 4ohm speakers (each channel) at about THD+N = 6%. This is above the 1% but below 10%, it would depend on your application if this acceptable or not.

    Regarding using a TPA2026D2 for each speaker, it is not recommended to use Class-D amplifiers in Parallel-BTL connection if it is not specified for this kind of load connection.
    If using only one of the channels you would have the same amount of power as if using both of them.
