TAS5414C: About Output of TAS5414C

Part Number: TAS5414C
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: , TAS5414A, TPA6404-Q1

Hello,

My customer is asking about TAS5414C at PBLTL mode(mono).

1)  Can TAS5414C output with following connection?

Conditions:

DC supply(PVDD): 12V、

Speaker: load 1Ω(0.8Ω min.)

Output : 60W Max

2) In PBLTL mode(mono), which OUT N/P  is connected to speaker’s polarity?

Out1 N/P or Out3 N/P -> Speaker + ?

Out2 N/P or Out4 N/P -> Speaker - ?

PBTL mode connection isn’t described in datasheet..

  • Hello,

The TAS5414C-Q1 cannot be operated in the PBTL manner.  In the datasheet section 8.2.2.2,  the Parallel Operation is described.

  • Hello Gregg,

    Thank you for comments.

About paralleling output, I could understand it with below e2e, and sloa196:design guide(1.12 Paralleling Outputs session).

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/audio-group/audio/f/audio-forum/601381/tas5414c-q1-tas5414c-q1-power-supply-and-pbtl/2211258?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=TAS5414C%2520%2520Parallel#2211258

“All four channels can be paralleled but it is no longer recommended on the "C" version because of thermal foldback(protection scheme).

But when thermal foldback is disabled (more risky), all four channels can be paralleled on TAS5414C-Q1.”

    My understanding is correct?

In this case, can it output 60W power with below conditions?

    Conditions:

    DC supply(PVDD): 12V、

    Speaker: load 1Ω(0.8Ω min.)

    Output : 60W Max

  • There is actually more to it.  In PBTL the thermal shutdown and other channel protections are linked.  The two PBTL channel groups are not linked.  So you could loose 2 channels of the 4 and have two channels trying to drive the 0.8ohms.  This is outside the spec of the device.  I would not attempt this.  The TAS5414A could do this, unfortunately, it is Not recommended for new designs.

  • Hello,

    Thank you for comments.

My customer could understand about 4ch parallel PBTL.

By the way, in TPA6404-Q1, it seems 4ch parallel PBTL is supported in datasheet(below) but it isn’t described in detail in datasheet.

Can this device output 60W power with below conditions?

    Conditions:

    DC supply(PVDD): 12V、

    Speaker: load 1Ω(0.8Ω min.)

    Output : 60W Max

  • Hi Tao,

Instead of trying to help you with the 4 channel PBTL, I will try to get a solution for you.

Basically, you need 60W into 1 ohm, you need 7.74Arms and 7.74Vrms.  At the minimum load of 0.8ohms you need 8.66Arms.  8.66A yields 12.24A peak and 7.74Vrms indicates that a 12Vdc supply will give you the required unclipped voltage.  With this data you can use a TAS5414C-Q1 with only two channels in PBTL with a 12V power supply.
