TLV320AIC3206EVM-U: Testing with digital microphone

Hi Experts,

Good day. Seeking assistance on this.

It appears that the EVM for this chip (TLV320AIC3206EVM-U) doesn't have a simple way to test the digital microphones. Is that correct? If that is the case, I will just solder up the pins properly to set up the digital microphones on it.

Regarding stereo vs mono microphone, does the stereo microphone allow for microphone beamforming? I am new to digital MEMs microphones, so I am not sure how this works. Based off my research of microphone beamforming, it requires at least two microphones separated that share the same electrical data signal which is what the stereo microphone setup is doing.

Hi Archie,

If by "simple way" you mean if there are digital microphones on-board then no. There are no microphones built in to the EVM. However soldering the pins will work.

You're also correct that beamforming typically requires two microphones however this codec doesn't support it. You would need a codec with a miniDSP on it such as the AIC325x. The two microphones are needed to create some kind of spatial resolution, and then an algorithm needs to process that data to isolate a particular direction.

Hello Jeff,

That is good to know regarding the codec. I will look into the AIC325x family. In terms of the algorithm, does the chip have an internal algorithm to use as an example or do we need to make our own?

Unfortunately we don't have a beamforming algorithm in place yet but we are in the process of developing one for this platform.

Wanted to clarify your question, the AIC325x family has a "Spatial Filtering" component in PurePath Studio that is very similar to beamforming.
