TAS5414C-Q1: Protection and Monitoring Functions

The amp chip in question is used in the Sony MEX-XB1000BT car radio. This car radio has a problem: it turns off and resets every time the volume is turned to maximum, even if the car radio is connected directly to the 12V battery with a large capacity cable. How come? Is it a voltage drop problem? Should I use an even larger and even shorter cable? Should I use a high capacity super capacitor in parallel with the battery?

What kind of tests can be done to understand what the problem is?

    I am not familiar with the Sony Car radio.  I am familiar with the TAS5414C-Q1.  The TAS5414C-Q1 has many protection mechanisms for over current and over temperature.  When driven to very loud volumes (volume at maximum) the device may overheat and shutdown.  I do not know how the microcontroller in the radio takes care of this fault.  There are also over current mechanisms to limit the current.  This may trigger the microcontroller to turn off the audio.  

    You many need to consult Sony to see how they have protected their radio.

    However, I noticed that the car radio turns off even when it's just turned on, so it can't be an overheating problem. The turning off happens immediately as soon as the volume is turned up to maximum. I think it could be a short transients in which a voltage drop occurs.
    Is there a way to read the logs on the I2C port to understand what the problem is?

  • Hi Aldo,

    You can look at the /FAULT pin to see if a fault is being trigger by the amp. The pin will be pulled low by a fault.  I would use an oscilloscope to check it.  You can connect to the I2C pins and listen to the port data.  I would not try to talk to the amp as it cannot have two master I2C devices on the same bus.
