TAS2781EVM: Unable to access device from PPC3

Part Number: TAS2781EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS2781

Hello, I just received a TAS2781EVM and installed PPC3 with TAS2781 EVM App but the PPC TAS2781 App module always shows the module as "offline" in the window.

I have not changed any DIP switch configuration since receiving the unit from TI.

The unit shows up under device manager as "TI USB UAC2.0" and "USB Input Device" using HID driver.

I have rebooted my machine since installing the software.

I am unable to play audio via "TI USB UAC2.0" device, the attached speaker makes no sound and I am unable to measure any signal between OUT+ and OUT-

I believe that I have followed whatever sparse documentation that I've been able to find.

I am powering the unit with a 12v 3A supply via the barrel jack connector and connecting to my PC via the micro-USB port.

PPC3 version is 3.2.1, TAS2781 App version is 3.0.0, and TI USB Audio UAC2.0 driver version is 4.59.0.40491

  • Hi John,

When you say that the you are unable to play from the "TI USB UAC2.0". are you seeing an issue with the audio endpoint in the windows audio device manager?

when the EVM is connected to the PC do you see a blue LED illuminated on the top side of the EVM? this LED indicates that the MCU which handles the USB connection is ready.

when you load the TAS2781 ppc3 application do you see a "connect" button in the bottom left of the window? i believe you have said it is reading as "offline"?

If you are able to connect to PPC3, then you will need to load the "Tuning and Audio Processing" panel in order to download the configuration to the device.

    Regards,
    Arthur

  • Hi Arthur,

Windows has no issue sinking audio to the device and there are no issues in Device Manager, as shown

I do see a blue light on the EVM, here is a photo showing it and the jumper settings which should be set to the default:

I do not see a connect button in PPC3, here is what I see after loading the TAS2781 App and selecting Mono and Start:

At this point, I think that I might have a bad EVM?

  • Hi John,

I  agree with you that the EVM may be bad. Once installed PPC3 will install the latest audio drivers( I checked and it is the same driver on my machine) , and since your board jumper settings are correct I cannot explain why PPC3 is not giving the opportunity to connect.

Can you please check one thing for me? on the bottom side of the board there is a buck converter IC which is intended to be 3.3V, however we chose an alternate part number which was a 5V buck, this caused a few issues on the board and some of them may have been missed when we fixed this.

the IC "U2" is on the bottom side under this part of the board. if the last digit of the part number is 5, then it is the incorrect. E2E is not allowing me to attach an image to show you, but it will be in the bottom center of the board if you reference the image of the EVM you shared.

Otherwise, I apologize for the inconvenience, can you contact TI support to get a replacement EVM? you can reference this thread as an endorsement that the EVM is not good.

    Regards,

    Arthur

  • Thanks Arthur, I will contact them now.

For what it's worth, U2 appears to be a L536033.

  • thanks john,

    Apologies once again.

    Regards,

    Arthur
