PCM1821EVM: spec check

Part Number: PCM1821EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM1821, PCM4201, DRV134

Hi

PCM1821 transmits 32-bit two-channel data. The customer's product actually only has a mono signal. When the back-end MCU receives the I2S dual-channel data, it needs to discard one channel, which is very cumbersome to process. Can I ask if PCM1821 can be set to 16bit mono signal output? Or is there any recommendation for an Audio Codec with mono MIC IN or Line in, 16bit mono I2S output?

  • Hi Gareth,

PCM1821 is pin controlled and only has the option to output in 32-bit TDM or I2S format, if 16-bit is required i recommend switching the SW controlled version of this device TLV320ADC(3/5/6)120. In the software controlled version you can disable either the L/R channel data of SDOUT and configure the wordlength to be 16bits.

    An example here:

There is a mono ADC, PCM4201 that is 24bit word length, you can input 16 bit data and the output data will be appended with 0's but in DSP/TDM format. This device is also H/W controlled if that is required by the customer.

Since the customer only has a mono signal I suggest adding a buffer amplifier or line driver (a good example in the audio portfolio is DRV134) that can convert the signal to stereo. You can present a question to the op-amp experts for a proper device suggestion.
