Hi Audio team -

I would like to know how to calculate the power of a quad class D audio amp. This power will be used to run our thermal simulation.

 

Given: 45w 2R 10%THD @ 14.4 V per speaker on TAS6424E-Q1

Please let me know if there is a resource to be used. Thanks!

    Hi Reed,

    First of all, nobody runs an audio amplifier at full power, 10% THD, continuously.  To determine the power loss for a thermal simulation, you need to estimate the average power the user will be using.  The worst case with audio is usually 30 to 35% of max 1% power.  Take this number, which is a bout 10W into 2 ohms and multiply it by 4.  So look at the datasheet efficiency or power dissipation curves to find determine the power loss at 40W into 2 ohms.  There is an example of the heatsink calculation in the datasheet.

    Do not try to run 45W continuously as you will encounter thermal warnings and shutdowns.
