Class-G power supply reference design for TAS563x

I am very interested in the class-G power supply reference design for TAS563x mentioned on the TAS5631 product page.

Unfortunately I couldn’t find any further information about this design.

Can you give me an indication of its release date and price?

Hi, Thomas,

That reference design is still going thru testing. Since it operates off line voltage, we have all kinds of certifications, etc needed. Now I see why wall worts are SO popular! LOL.

The class-G can't actually be used with the TAS5631 as we don't have the proper feedback from the 5631 to the power supply to control it. The class-G only works with the TAS5630 and 5615 where we have the clipping flag terminal which is used to change the output of the class-G power supply.

We actually just revised the TAS5631 d/s to remove references to the class-G power supply.

Hi Don,

May I know what kind of audio improvement of the TI Class G power supply?

Most of the SMPS in the industry are not suitable use in Audio products.

Hi, KK,

This power supply design offer low output impedance in the audio band so it is very good for driving audio applications. Class-G is good because it helps with efficiency, thermal, as well as EMC.

We have numerous power supply designs for audio that our power group has generated. They are listed in the Product Folders under Reference Designs -- for example, look here: http://focus.ti.com/docs/prod/folders/print/tas5342a.html#referencedesigns

The Power group is working on releasing this class-G power supply designed for use with TAS56xx family. It looks like it's going to be several months until they have it published, though.

Thanks for your reply and looking for your solution.

One more interesting question would like to ask.......

Did you compare the sound quality (or taste) for using SMPS or Linear power supply ?

Is it too much sound "feeling" using this 2 kind of power supply?

I had experience to building a discrete class D (From www.hypex.nl) UCD400HG, for using SMPS and Linear PSU, the difference is too big.

KK,

99% of our large customers are using SMPS. If you use a linear supply, then you lose a lot of the benefits of class-D.

The SMPS has to be designed correctly; you are right, a normal off the shelf SMPS may not work very well for audio...
