1/2 TAS5630?

Hi All:

Does anyone know what it takes, or if it is even safely possible to use only 1/2, i.e. only 1 channel of the TAS5630? We are working on an application in which only one BTL channel is needed. Power supply specification is rather critical and there for every mA we can save would be a benefit. So if all I want to run is one channel can I leave all supply voltages disconnected for the channel NOT being used and float or tie the inputs to ground? OR do I have to "run" the other half of the amp and just not use it? 

If this has been discussed please point to the correct thread.

    Thanks for your patience.

    You have three options that I can see:

    1.Continue to use the TAS5630 and:

    a.Setup the second channel as a dummy BTL channel. This means you would still power all the supplies, install all the boot strap caps, include the DC blocking caps on the inputs, and LC filter on the outputs. The difference here is that the output inductors can be smaller since they only need to handle the 50% switching of the PWM, not any audio power. The inputs for this unused channel need to be grounded before the input DC blocking cap. Make sure that the OC setting is lowered and set appropriately since OC limit gets doubled when using PBTL and you don't want to have it set higher than your smaller inductors could handle. Unfortunately this device doesn't have a way to shut down one channel.

    b.You can also configure the part as PBTL. This allows you to use smaller inductors on all 4 outputs. As a reminder, all four inductors need to match in this configuration. With this configuration all four channels can be driven less to achieve the same output power. This also increases the efficiency of the system and will save you power overall.

    2.Another option is to use a newer device like the TPA3255 which is very similar but includes a channel shut down feature. This device has much better audio performance with THD of <0.005% and a bandwidth of up to 100kHz.
