TPA3221EVM: Maximum recommended/Allowable PVDD

I have received the TPA3221EVM I ordered and it works perfectly. However, I have questions regarding the maximum PVDD allowed;

  1. Why is the EVM constrained to 30 VDC maximum as stated in the SLAU724B literature?
  2. The TPA3221 datasheet indicates that the recommended PVDD can range from 7 to 32VDC, therefore it seems the maximum recommended rail voltage can be up to 32 VDC, correct?
  3. I understand that the TPA3221 absolute maximum voltage is 37VDC but is not recommended for use at this rail voltage.
  4. Will any damage or reduction in performance to the EVM result if using up to, but not exceeding 32 VDC?

  • Hi Jim,

    Please see the Recommended Operating Conditions table for the normal PVDD operating voltage. We recommend 30V typical with a maximum supply voltage of 32V, which ~5% headroom for supply variation.

    The absolute maximum is the pin when the outputs are switching, which includes PVDD plus the overshoot from the square waves. However, if you operate with a PVDD of 37V the overshoot will be much higher and you will damage the device.

    I understand. I wanted to make sure to don't overstep the boundary conditions while attempting to reach the maximum performance of the IC. I am using a regulated switch mode converter to generate the rail. I'll do some statistical analysis to make sure my rail voltage doesn't exceed the 32 V maximum with component variations and I think I'll be OK.
