I am planning to use PCM1861-Q1 110 dB 2-channel hardware-controlled audio ADC in my design due to  PCM 2902 is not recommended for new design. High sampling rate and SNR are crucial issue as well. So, I have decided use PCM series. But I am confused about choosing  PCM1861. I do not want to deal with software therefore it is suitable for design. Can you clarify that what is the difference between PCM1861 and PCM1862 in terms of hardware controled and software control.

    As far as the differences between the PCM1861 and PCM1862 goes, PCM1861 is Hardware controlled device which allows the device to be configured by changing the state of some input pins (either pull-up or connecting to GND). This eliminates the need for host processor to configure the device via I2C or SPI. As a result, it simplifies the overall solution assuming you do not have host processor on the system in discussion and also will not need firmware implementation for PCM186x configuration at start-up.

    PCM1861 has input pins that can be set to configure Audio format (LJ, RJ, I2S), Audio interface mode (Master/Slave), Audio MUX and gain select among other things.


    For a software controlled device, all of the above settings can be configured via register writes at start-up via host processor using I2C/SPI. Hope this clarifies your question. Thanks.

  • Actually, I was hesistant that if use PCM1861 and its reference design, I can transmit my audio signal without any software via choosing your chip which is hardware controlled PCM1861. I mean we target that there is an audio signal that is come from a kind of mixer( like DJ mixer) and it should send to main microcontroller( SOIC, it has embedded linux inside). And this soic chip will be able to send this data to internet with wifi.

    I got stuck problem that this PCM1861 can give us the input signal(audio intput) as an output signal that is convenient to send it to my main microcontroller. Or PCM1861 give us signal that just in its output.
