PCM2904: PCM2904 output clipping to VCCCI power rail

Part Number: PCM2904
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: PCM2900, PCM2906C

We have noticed that there is some severe ciipping on the output of the PCM2904 chip. We are inputting a standard Wave file, and the output appears to be 2.9V peak to peak which implies that it needs a power supply of 5V (2.9/0.6). The VCCCI pin is typically 3.3V but in the datasheet there are some notes that the VCCCI pin can be increased to 3.67V to 3.85V with the limit being 4V.

Is this a flaw in the chip and will replacing the chip with the PCM2900 or PCM2906 fix this?

  • Hi, Fergus,

This is not an expected behavior of this device. 5V VCCI is not supported, so it is possible that something is wrong with the device configuration or schematic. Do you see this behavior with any input signal?.

Please also consider that the PCM2904 does have some known issues, that were fixed for a similar device, the PCM2906C, which is the recommend device to use instead of PCM2904. You can find the associated errata on the PCM2904 product folder.
