TLV320ADC3001: TLV320ADC3001 24-bit or 16-bit?

Part Number: TLV320ADC3001
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320ADC3101

I'm confused on whether or not the TLV320ADC's are in-fact 24bit ADCs. The datasheet for the TLV320ADC3001 specs 24-bit on page 4 (Device comparison). However I noticed the following discrepancies:

  1. Electrical characteristics are done with 16-bit audio data
  2. Digi-Key describes the part (296-24139-1-ND) as a "IC ADC 16BIT I2C 96KHZ 16-DSBGA" (however, under resolution, the bits show 24b)
  3. Mouser lists the same part with a description and resolution of 16-bit (595-V320ADC3001IYZHR)
  4. Arrow lists the part as 24-bit (TLV320ADC3001IYZHR)

Same question applies to the TLV320ADC3101.

Thank you

  • Hi, Logan,

Welcome to E2E, thanks for your interest in our products!

The ADCs of the ADC3100 effectively have a resolution of 24-bit, while the audio serial interface can be configured to stream 16, 20, 24 or 32 bits of data. If 16 or 24 bit data is selected, the LSBs will be truncated, while zeroes are added  for 32-bit mode.
