TLV320DAC3101: how to use TLV320DAC3101 as single-ended output

Part Number: TLV320DAC3101
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLV320DAC3203, TPA6017A2, TLV320DAC3100

Hi, TI team,

The TLV320DAC3101 integrates two class-D speaker drivers.I know it can driver two differential loads(SPLM/SPLP、SPRM/SPRP) . But my custom  wants to know if it can be used as a single-ended output. If can,how to connect the speaker at the output end? Is it necessary to design a differential output to single-ended output circuit? What do you think?

  • Hi, Amy,

It is possible to use the Class-D positive output as single-ended. However, there are some consequences that the customer must consider when using the Class-D output in this way.

We don't recommend to use it in single-ended configuration because the signal performance is reduced. The differential mode allows to have noise reduction. In addition, the Class-D output only can reach the half bridge in single-ended mode.

If possible, please use the differential mode in the TLV320DAC3101 Class-D driver. So, the speaker output can reach the electrical characteristics of the datasheet. Otherwise, we cannot guarantee the best audio performance.

Why does customer need to use the output in single-ended mode? Could you provide details on that so we can suggest some alternatives?

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.
  • Luis Fernando Rodríguez S,

Thank you for your very prompt reply.

In my customer design, the audio IC and the speakers are not on the same PCB board. The speakers are connected to the audio IC board by two cables. Customer reserved only two cable interfaces for speakers. And they need to connect two speakers, so they can only use single-ended output.

    Customer design requirements:
    1. single-ended output
    2. Can driver two speakers (8Ω/1W)
    3. Audio input type: I2S audio interface
    4. Power supple voltage: 3.3V or 5V
    Can you recommend an IC?
  • Hi, Amy,

We don't have a single-chip solution that supports I2S input and single-ended speaker driver.

    So, we have these recommendations:

    1. The TPA6017A2 would be a good solution since it supports Class-AB output. This can be used in single-ended mode but it only supports analog input. So, it would require to connect an external DAC device such the TLV320DAC3101 or TLV320DAC3203.

    2. The TLV320DAC3100 could be another choice, but you would need to connect the two 8-ohms speaker loads in parallel. In that way you would use the Class-D outputs connected to both speakers in differential mode.
