PCM9211: Recommendation for transmission according to AES3 standard

Part Number: PCM9211
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DS89C21, TLV3541, THVD1452

Dear Sir or Madam,

i would like to convert the audio output signal at MPO0 (Pin15) of the PCM to a signal according to the AES3 standard. My configuration looks like this:

The DS89C21 will be used for differential transmission. I would need design support for the boxes with ??? in the block diagram. Is an additional amplifier/level converter for RXIN2 (Pin35) of the PCM9211 required?
Does the digital output signal at MPO0 of the PCM9211 have to be amplified additionally, e.g. by using a TLV3541?

Best regards,

Simon

  • Hi Simon,

Whether or not you need an amplifier depends on your logic levels. The PCM9211 will output an S/PDIF stream on MPO0 so as long as your line driver can accept the 3.3V signaling of the PCM9211 you don't need anything else between it. If your line driver can't accept 3.3V signaling, I would say you'd be better off switching to a line driver that can rather than adding an additional block.

On the input side, you shouldn't need an additional amplifier if you have a line receiver, but the RXIN0 and RXIN1 pins both incorporate coax amplifiers if this is needed.

    Zak

  • Hello,

so it should be possible to give the output signal at MPO0 directly to a line driver for 3.3V. Could the THVD1452 be used for this?

    Best regards,

    Simon

  • Hi Simon,

I'm not familiar with that family but from a quick look at the datasheet I think that would work well.
