TPA6166A2: Question of TPA6166 to Support Connectors with Normal Open Type Jack Sense

Part Number: TPA6166A2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TS3A227E

Hi Sirs,

I am starting a new thread for the TPA6166 schematic design for connectors with normal closed type jack sense.
The TPA6166 supports normal closed type jack sense. The

We can see a logic high (1.8V) on Jack_Sense pin when headphones were inserted and logic low (0V) when headphones were removed.

Would you please advise that if we can we support a headphones connector with Normal Open type Jack Sense with the concept below?
If yes, what is product line's recommended pull up resistors on R2?

Thank you and Best regards,

Wayne Chen

  • Hi, Wayne,

I think this would depend of the tip voltage level when it is connected. The TPA6166A2 normally senses the voltage at the Jack_Sense pin from the jack and it compares it internally. So, you would need to see the way to route it to the Tip when the plug is connected or to the same voltage level that the Jack should get when the plug is connected. Otherwise, you will see an inverted logic when you connect the plug.

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.

  • Hello Luis,

Would you pls confirm if the schematic doable for normal open type connector? We need official reference design of normal open type connector for customers.

  • Hi, Wayne,

Could you clarify the purpose of the resistors and MOSFET? Could you explain the cases of jack insertion and removal?

    Thank you.

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.

  • Hello Luis,

According to the datasheet, the TPA6166 supports "normal closed" type jack sense pin, while customers need "normal open" type jack sense hence we are planning to add a MOSFET and a pull up resistor as an inverter (we picked the circuit from TS3A227E reference design) to convert the jack sense signal for the TPA6166. We need product line's suggestion of our proposal.

    Thank you and Bet regards,

  • Hello Luis,

    Addition, would you pls advise
    (1) Are there internal pull up and pull down resistors with the JACK_SENSE and TIP pins of the TPA6166?
    (2) Is the JACK_SENSE signal edge trigger or level trigger (0V = headsets not presented, 1.8V=jack inserted)?

    Thank you and Best regards,
