LM1972: Design Guidelines

Part Number: LM1972

Hello Guys,

Good day.

Our customer have LM1972 parts and wanted to start designing with it. However he does not know where to start for there are very limited information on the device product page aside from the datasheet.

Hope you could provide assistance on where he should start?

Thanks in advance!

  • Hi, Art,

Correct, the LM1972 is an old part and there's no much information about it. Even we don't have an EVM. Why did the customer select this part? Could he provide details about this selection? Has he considered our audio DACs instead of this device?

In case the customer is not open to alternative solutions, I would recommend to ensure the following design tips:

    - Separate the digital pins traces from the analog pin traces. This practice is commonly used in order to avoid high-frequency noise on the analog portion. If possible, separate the digital (logic) ground from the analog ground in two different planes. Then, join both planes with few 0-ohm resistors or single PCB traces.

    - Place decoupling capacitors with values 0.1uF and 10uF as close as possible to the power pins. This practice will help to keep the voltage level stable in case the device has low PSRR.

    - In case the LM1972 output is connected to another amplifier, I would recommend to add an out-of-band filter to eliminate the high-frequency content that could be added to the analog portion.

Please let me know if you have additional questions or comments.

    Best regards,
    Luis Fernando Rodríguez S.
