PCM1753: Output DC if a non-changing DAC word is written?

Part Number: PCM1753

Hey, can you tell me if the PCM1753 will output DC if a non-changing DAC word is written to it?

  • Hi Nicholas,

The PCM1753 features a delta-sigma modulator to generate its output.  This means that the output voltage is actually switching at a faster over-sampling rate than the sample rate being provided.  So only with external filtering is the output ever truly DC.  If you provide the same sample value continuously (i.e. repeat the same code over and over while continuously providing the SCK signal), the output will state at the same oversampled average value.  If the clocks stop, the output will go to some other DC level that just happens to be the last combination of DSM segments that were last on.

    Thanks,

    Paul
