TPA3156D2: What the power supply requirement for TPA3156D2 at 140W Mono mode?

Part Number: TPA3156D2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA3220

HI,

I have a customer planning to use TPA3156D2 to drive a 2ohm load using a 24V supply. Target is to achieve 140W output at 10% THD.

However we are concern on the power supply requirement, is the recommendation on the user guide at 8A, 4.5~26V provide enough margin?

Would TPA3220/3221 be a better alternative for above application?

Thanks,

Christina

  • Hi Christina,

I believe you will need a power supply that can deliver more current than 8A.  10% THD values aren't sinusoidal so it makes the normal power calculations we use using sine waves less accurate. However dividing the 10% power by 1.25 gives an approximation of the 1% power level. So 112W is where 1% THD will likely be. So using this value plug it in for P= I^2*R and I = 7.48Arms. Multiply the square root of 2 and I see needing 10.5A just to reach 112W.

The recommended power supply from the user's guide appears to be directed for BTL operations rather than PBTL, possibly PBTL operation with a higher load impedance.
