Hi I am Onur,

We have a question about PLLatinum Sim. Nowadays, we try to choose best synthesizer for our new project, so we make some simulation with PLLatinum Sim and take measurement from LMX2820EVM.

In PLLatinum Sim when I click LMX2820 Phase Noise Tips, first tip say that ‘Phase Noise is better for high charge pump modes’. But our simulation results do not support this explanation.

Also in datasheet Figure 6.1, we have three questions:

1-) How the charge pump current was set during this measurement.

2-) Is the loop filter configuration same with LMX2820EVM.

3-) Can you share with us reference oscillator and reference oscillator phase noise value in figure 6.1 (1k,10k,100k,1M)

    Hi Onur,

    I suppose it would be more accurate to say "PLL noise is better for higher charge pump current modes." However, loop bandwidth also changes, with higher charge pump current leading to higher bandwidth (all other things being equal). It's possible that, with increased charge pump gain, the bandwidth change increases the noise at higher offsets with the increased bandwidth.

    The plot below demonstrates this by taking a comparison trace of the PLL noise (dotted red) with 2.8mA charge pump gain. Compare this against the solid red trace labeled PLL, and you'll see that increasing the charge pump gain has decreased the 1/f noise and brought the PLL FOM down.

    Your screenshots show that the loop bandwidth has not been made equal. In the first case, your loop bandwidth is 10s of kHz; in the second case, your loop bandwidth is 100s of kHz. If you redesign the loop filter for the same bandwidth with different charge pump gain, you may find results are different.

    In the next screenshot, I have reduced the loop bandwidth of the 15.4mA charge pump case to the same as the 2.8mA case - about 97kHz. The comparison trace (dotted red) is still the 2.8mA charge pump case from earlier, with default EVM loop filter values. But now we have changed the loop filter values in the 15.4mA case to match the loop bandwidth more closely. It becomes very clear that the PLL phase noise is better with higher charge pump current. The overall noise is, however, greatly increased, because the loop filter does not attenuate as much VCO noise.

    Now, more importantly: your oscillator input (green trace) is completely dominating the total noise. There's hardly any reason to play with PLL parameters when the reference noise dominates the application. I'll upload our 100MHz Wenzel oscillator used for evaluation below.

    Onto your questions:

    1. We take characterization measurements of the PLL for 1/f noise and figure of merit with a 100MHz Wenzel OCXO. The charge pump currents are characterized using a Keithley 2400 SMU, with the assumption that the charge pump will be operating at about 1.25V output (a good assumption once the VCO calibration is complete). The VCO is characterized using an E5052B (and E5053A for higher bands), using the control voltage port with the charge pump tri-stated to determine open-loop voltage and gain characteristics. The output noise floor is measured at the highest offset we are capable of measuring, separately for the VCO direct output, the VCO multiplier output, and the channel divider output. Once we have the 1/f, PLL FOM, charge pump currents, VCO coefficients, and noise floor, the PLL model is entirely simulated by the transfer functions of noise for the reference, loop filter, PLL, VCO, and output buffer noise floor (as can be seen on the phase noise plots by the different colored lines, summing logarithmically to the total phase noise).
    2. PLLatinum Sim models the loop transfer function, and the transfer function can be calculated for any offset with any loop filter coefficients. The loop filter coefficients are actually entirely unnecessary for measuring PLLatinum Sim's required transfer function coefficients, except for PLL FOM where the loop filter is designed for a very high gamma to reveal the PLL FOM at some offset where we can push away the filter/VCO noise. As such, PLLatinum Sim's phase noise model should be close to the real result for any reasonable loop filter values.
    3. I've attached a phase noise trace data we took of of our 100MHz Wenzel OCXO.

    Thanks for the quick response.

    100 MHz Wenzel OCXO phase noise values look so good.

    In datasheet Figure 6.1, What is the charge pump current value? (1.4 mA, 2.8mA…)

    In datasheet Figure 6.1, Are the values of loop filter same with LMX2820EVB? (C1LF:470pF,C2LF:68nF,C3LF:2.2nF,R2LF:68.1,R3LF:18.2)

    Hi Onur,

    The charge pump current was set at the max. value.

    The loop filter is same except for C1LF, the measurement was taken with 390pF. This will not make noticeable difference in phase noise.
