Hello guys,

A simple query to get my concept clear.

Now is the market for integrated VCO based PLLs.

What are the pros of using an external VCO (discrete) based PLLs.

The Loop Band width of external VCO based PLLs are lower (in few KHz range) which cannot be done in an integrated VCO, what other advantages or aspects are there.

In addition apart from miniaturization, what other advantages does an inbuilt VCO give a designer.

Hi Narendra,

The biggest advantage of an VCO integrated PLL is it can support a very wide output frequency range. For example, LMX2595 can support 10MHz to 20GHz output.

The biggest advantage of discrete PLL + VCO is the VCO phase noise is user controllable. User can pick or design a very good phase noise VCO.

It's all depend on the user's application and system requirement, both discrete and integrated solution have their application area.
