CDCM7005: Primary & Secondary clock requirement

Part Number: CDCM7005
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMK00306, LMK04906, LMK04610

We are using the CDCM7005 to generate multiple outputs, We are connecting 110 Mhz crystal oscillator with LVPECL output biased to required voltage level. output  to derive 5 different outputs.

Is it possible to  generate output clocks without Primary and secondary Reference clocks.

  • Hello Satish,

So you are using a XO instead of a VCXO, which means you asking if it is possible to use the CDCM7005 as a buffer.  Yes it is possible.  This is basically a HOLD type function for the device.

However you may consider some other buffer IC like LMK00306.  I also will point out we have an IC such as LMK04906 or LMK04610 which have flexibility to be used as clock gens or buffers.  LMK04906 can be used with external VCXO like CDCM7005, LMK04610 cannot close loop with external VCO).

When using the CDCM7005 as a buffer, I suggest programming /HOLD = 0 (Word 2, bit 29), this will tri-state the charge pump to help reduce possible noise.
