LMK04828: LMK04828

Part Number: LMK04828
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMK05318, LMX2820, LMX2594, LMK04832, LMK5B33216, LMK5C33216

Dear TI,

Thanks for your consistent support.

we are considering your PLL device into your Xilinx development platform. so we want to receive the recommendation of which device is approapriate for low phase noise.

Could you recommend the best one from LMK04828 vs LMK05318 and LMX2820 vs LMX2594 with your kind explanation?

Thank you.

Jaden Heo

  • Hi Jaden,

For the LMK04828 vs LMK05318 comparison, the 04828 is a 15-output jitter cleaner with a dual-loop architecture and the 05318 is an 8-output network synchronizer with a digital PLL (DPLL) architecture. The 05318 should have better jitter performance than the 04828 (50 ps vs 88 ps) but the output noise floor levels appear to be about the same (approximately -160 dBc/Hz) as reported in the datasheets as far as I can tell. I am not familiar with the LMX devices so I have paged one of our marketing experts to assist you with the recommendations.

    Thanks,

    Evan Su

  • Hello Evan,

Thank you for your kind feedback and based on your reply, I'm studying your products more. Actually, we should choice the right your product to improve the EVM performance of 5G NR and Wi-Fi 7, so we should know the pros and cons of LMK04828 and LMK05318. through your PLLatinum sim, we found that phase noise performance of LMK05318 is better than LMK04828 in the range of over offset 10MHz, but under offset 10Mhz, it is reverse. and regarding LMK05318 BAW VCO(VCO10 gives the better jitter performance than VCO2. It is very diffcult for us to decide that which one is best choisce from LMK05318 and LMK04828. Could you recommend it with the reasonable data to improve the EVM performance?

    Thank you.

  • Hello Jiman,

Let me shed some more light on this. The answer is it depends.

    • First let me point out that for the best performance we have LMK04832 that has better phase noise performance than LMK04828. Anywhere LMK04828 is considered I would recommend upgrading to LMK04832.
    • LMK04832/LMK04828 are analog jitter cleaners that jitter clean using an external VCXO. An external VCXO gets you the best performance (better than LMK05318 especially close in) however an external VCXO adds BOM.
    • In contrast the LMK05318 is suitable for applications where board size is constrained and an external VCXO may not be preferred. In this case the LMK05318 internal BAW VCO can be used to jitter clean.
    • Also in applications where close in noise is not as important and far out phase noise is important LMK05318 may be suitable.
    • Finally it is also important to note that LMK05318 does not support JESD204B/C which is often a requirement with Xilinx RF SoCs. In this case (when external VCXO is not preferred and JESD204B/C is needed), consider using LMK5B33216 or LMK5C33216.

    To summarize:

    • For the best performance use LMK04832 with an external VCXO.
    • For a cost/space optimized solution use LMK05318 if JESD204B/C is not required, if it is required use LMK5B33216/LMK5C33216

Regarding the RF synthesizer LMX2820 is our latest synthesizer and has better phase noise and spurious performance than LMX2594. For best performance pick LMX2820.

  • Hello Vibhu,

Your excellent summary will be helpful to your new project.

    Thank you so much.
