LMX2820EVM: instant calibration time

Part Number: LMX2820EVM

Hi Team,

Use TICs Pro to simulate instant calibration and use an oscilloscope to grab the low pulse width of TP_LD. TICs Pro follows the flow from this link(https://e2e.ti.com/support/clock-timing-group/clock-and-timing/f/clock-timing-forum/1188044/lmx2820-lmx2820-not-locking-with-instant-calibration/4498140?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=LMX2820%2520instant%2520calibration.#4498140)

In VCO and VCO Divider mode, the frequency hopping lock time for instant calibration is between 6-7us. However, according to the manual, the instant calibration time is 2.5us and in VCO Doubler mode, the frequency hopping lock time is 60-70us.

1) Why is the lock time for instant calibration more than 5us? Is the settling time included?

2) Why is the lock time significantly being longer with the output doubler?

Could you please help check this case? Thanks.

Best Regards,

Cherry

  • Hi Cherry,

    See a test example below.

In this example, the lock time is less than 10µs. This lock time can be further reduced with a smaller INSTCAL_DLY setting.

No matter if the output frequency is direct VCO output or with doubler output, the switching time with instant calibration will be similar.
