LMK5B12204: Higher current draw when started from EEPROM than ROM

It's me again. Slight smile

One tcs file generated a hex register values file and an EEPROM map file, all 3 attached.

When I startup to ROM and load the registers, I get a good state with everything locked with a 290ma current draw.

If I use the map to program the EEPROM and startup to EEPROM, I get a good state with everything locked BUT a 350ma current draw.

I'm stumped.

    Actually I have a bit more info and it's even stranger..   The extra current draw happens on 2 out of 3 devices.  The third uses the same 290ma regardless of which mode it's started in.

  • Oh, I forgot to ask..  Assuming there's no difference in the settings, could an ESD event cause the device to consume more current when running from EEPROM?  Anyway, historically, I'm a magnet for bizarre issues like this so don't spend a lot of time on it.  Slight smile

    I am using the LMK05318BEVM evaluate but disable the other 4 outputs to mimic the LMK5B12204.

    Power supply is 3.3V (on board LDOs are bypassed).

    Test #1 (ROM config):

    1. Load ROM-test hex file into TICS Pro.
    2. Program EEPROM.
    3. Boot-up in EEPROM mode.
    4. Current is 206 mA. The PRIREF is valid but the DPLL is not phase or frequency locked and BAW LOCK is 0.

    Test #2 (EEPROM config):

    1. Load EEPROM-test hex file into TICS Pro.
    2. Program EEPROM.
    3. Boot-up in EEPROM mode.
    4. Current is 285 mA. The PRIREF is valid and the DPLL is locked.

    I observe a key register difference: R12[0] is 0 for the ROM config and 1 for the EEPROM config.

    R12[0] Reserved bit that must be set as 1 to allow the device to automatically initiate PLL calibration at boot-up. Otherwise, when set to 0, the device halts after the configuration is written preventing normal operation.

    I saw that for your ROM readback, the DPLL is marked as locked (R13 = 0x00). However, when I use your file after boot-up, I cannot get the DPLL or APLL to lock unless the device boots up with R12[0] =1 or I write R12[0] = 1 after boot-up.

    On my bench, I see 290 mA as the typical power consumption with your config and I did not reach 350 mA. It's possible that if the device got damaged at one point then the current draw is higher.

    1. Can you please elaborate if R12[0] is set to 1 in both of your tests?
    2. Also, is this using an evaluation module or a custom board? Please share a schematic if the a custom board is used.

    In the register export file used for the ROM test (register commit method), R12 = 0x03 but it isn't being written because section 9.5.5 of the datasheel says ...

    Write the register settings from lower to higher addresses (R0 to R352) while applying the following register
    mask (do not modify mask bits = 1):
    • Mask R12 = A7h (Device reset/control register)
    

    So in the register read-back R12 = 0x00.

    For the EEPROM test, I have to use the sram direct-write method which has EEPROM_IMG_IDX12=24 (0x18) but the register read-back for that test does show R12 = 0x03.

    So now I'm very confused.

    Both the LMK5B12204 and LMK05318B datasheets say to mask out R12 with 0xA7.  The 5318B register programming manual shows the following in table 1-14 which would agree with that...

    but in table 2-15 it shows

                          PLL and output start-up sequence after a device reset. A device
                          reset can be triggered by the power-on-reset, PDN pin, or by writing
                          to the RESET_SW bit. If AUTOSTRT is 0, the device will halt after
                          the configuration phase; a subsequent write to set the AUTOSTRT
                          bit will initiate the start-up sequence. In Test mode, the AUTOSTRT
                          bit is ignored after device reset, but start-up can be triggered by a
                          subsequent write to set the AUTOSTART bit.

    The 12204 register programming manual doesn't have the second section with the sram map but table 15 shows the same as the 5318B 2-15.

    Also, if you look at R12[5] it's description is also inconsistent. 

    So is the 0xA7 mask just wrong seeing as it masks out bits 5, 2, 1, 0?  Should it really be 0x84 to mask out R12[7] and R12[2]?

    The board is custom "bare-bones".  It has the device and all of the caps and pull-up/downs specified in Table 6-1 Pin Functions.  It's almost exactly like the schematic in Figure 10-4 adjusted for all LVCMOS ins and outs with appropriate voltage dividers to get from 3.3v to 2.5v.

    1. First of all, I need to clarify something about the ROM. I have already removed such functionality for the datasheet of a similar part: LMK05318B-Q1 (the automotive grade version). I am in the process of making several datasheets improvements for the LMK05318B/LMK5B12204. One of the updates is to remove the ROM as a feature/function because the internal ROM page registers is not recommended for customer use. You can still boot up from ROM, but I do not advise that you rely on the default register settings from ROM.
    2. Ok I see what you did: Boot up from ROM, then program the device using the recommended register sequence. In that case, R12[1] would not be written because of the mask.
      1. The datasheet makes the assumption that R12[1] is already set because it is set in the default EEPROM page and default configurations in TICS Pro. However, the ROM does not set the bit.
    3. Now, to talk about the EEPROM programming: there is not a 1:1 address mapping between the active registers and EEPROM. This is because there are more active registers than EEPROM required bytes (the EEPROM does not store status bits).
      1. This means that when you see "EEPROM_IMG_IDX12=24 (0x18)", that does not correspond to register 12.
      2. The datasheet has a nice visual of the mapping differences in the Programming section:

    4. Regarding the programming manual, thank yo for bringing this to my attention. The default/factory EEPROM configuration sets

  • Thank you so much (yet again) for the detailed response!!  The spreadsheet is most useful.

    I already understood that the EEPROM addresses didn't map to the register numbers but what was confusing me was the two sections in the LMK05318B register programming manual.  I had assumed that section 2 were the SRAM/EEPROM addresses and R12 in section 2 does seem to correlate to R12 in section 1.  Anyway, I get it now and the 0xA7 mask makes perfect sense.

    It's funny, I just got a bunch of the Q1 devices this morning.  The date in it's datasheet is still 25-Sep-2024 so I guess an update will be issued at some point?  Also, will the LMK05318B register programming manual continue to apply to the Q1 and 12204?
