LMK05318B: miscellaneous questions

Part Number: LMK05318B

Tool/software:

Hello,

The number of registers obtained by the TICSPro GUI is larger than the register map in the "LMK05318B Programmer's Guide". So, my customer has questions as follows.

Q1. Which should I do about registers that are not listed in the Programmer's Guide, #1 or #2 below?
#1 Registers not listed in the Programmer's Guide do not need to be initialized?
#2 Should registers not listed in the Programmer's Guide be written to the data value obtained by the TICSPro GUI?

Q2. All R/W registers listed in the Programmer's Guide should be initialized?

My customer also has questions about Figure 10-1 in the datasheet. (Their “Start-up Sequence" is “EEPROM+SPI(Soft pin Mode)“.)
Q3-1. Initial settings are done in “Device Block Configuration”?
Q3-2. At the initialization, how should the RESET_SW Bit be set? Which is right, #1, #2 or #3 below?
#1 RESET_SW = 1 first. After initializing registers, RESET_SW = 0.

#2 RESET_SW = 0 first. After initializing registers, toggle RESET_SW = 1 to 0. In this case how much time RESET_SW has to be 1 at the minimum before cleared?
#3 If neither #1 nor #2 is correct, Please let them know the right way.
Q3-3. To confirm if PLLs are locked, which register bit should be checked for APLL and DPLL respectively?.

Best regards,

K.Hirano

  • Hi Hirano,

Please make sure to have the most recent release of the programmer's guide:

We updated the guide to better match TICS Pro.

    1. The recommendation is to use the TICS Pro listed registers as TICS Pro only exposes the necessary fields for programming.
    2. The device always boots-up from EEPROM. The EEPROM contains the necessary registers to get the LMK05318B to function. This means you do not need to initialize ALL of the registers besides the ones recommended in TICS Pro. By default, the EEPROM is configured to disable all outputs at start-up.
    3. "Device Block Configuration" in the datasheet figure refers to register configuration. This is done by loading from EEPROM or if desired, peforming I2C/SPI programming.
    4. For RESET_SW, we recommend toggling this bit after  modifying any APLL divider and APLL loop filter register setting. If you only modify the registers for the output format or output channel dividers, then a RESET_SW is not necessary. In general, you can issue the RESET_SW after initializing all of the registers as mentioned in the 9.5.5 General Register Programming Sequence. When issuing a RESET_SW, no delay is necessary between setting and clearing, but you can apply a 10 microsecond delay if desired.
    5. For DPLL lock, please refer to DPLL_LOFL and DPLL_LOPL  (frequency and phase lock). For APLL lock, please refer to the BAW_LOCK which can be checked prior to DPLL lock.

    Regards,
    Jennifer
