Clock for SN65LV1021 Serializer

Hi everybody,

I am currently designing a SERDES interface for ARM and I want to use TI's SN65LV1021 Serializer. I read the datasheet and I am clear about most of the thing. Except the clock. This chip needs a clock signal. It is said that the signal should be LVTTL and it put the timing requirements also. However I am not sure what should I use to generate the clock because there is no recommended circuit and whatsoever.

I know that I might be able to use my ARM's clock or TI's independent clock generator, but I'm not so sure on which one is better.

Please share your experience and expertise. I am not quite sure which one is better.

Hi Fajar,

You can use any reference (ASIC/Oscillator) that meets the timing requirements for TCLK specified on page 8 of the datasheet. If you are not sure about the jitter performance from the ASIC (Max Input Jitter on TCLK = 150ps RMS), use a 10 MHz/40 MHz oscillator.

What about if I need to synchronize between the chip and the microcontroller? Do I have to use a clock distribution IC or something like that? If yes then can you suggest what I can use?
