Using SDI chips LMH03xx for arbitrary protocol

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMH0394, LMH0303, LMH0366, LMH0341, DS32EL0124

Hello: Can I use the nominally SDI parts such as LMH03xx for an arbitrary protocol at 3 Gbps? Are these parts somehow dependent on the specifics of the video SDI protocol? I need to send arbitrary data from the SerDes (either an FPGA built in transceiver, or LMH034x chips) over a cable. On the sending end I want to use the cable driver (e.g. LMH0303). At the receiving end I need to equalize the cable loss (using e.g. LMH0394) and then recover the data and the clock using LMH0366, before feeding the data to the FPGA.

Question: can I just use these chips with my own custom protocol running at 3 Gbps? Or do I need to strictly adhere to the video SDI protocol?

Thank you -- Wojtek
