Clock Buffer vs Mux

I have a question on Mux vs Clock buffer.
We are using a 1:2 Mux for Clock selection. One clock goes to either FPGA or FLash based on Mux sel line. Clock freq is 25MHz.

Can anyone please elaborate on the differences between this Mux and a clock buffer.
Are both same on the inside?

Hi Hithesh,

In this case, a mux would allow you to output a selection of 1:N signals to several outputs, depending on the # outputs on the device. In the case of clock distribution, a 1:2 buffer simply replicates the input to two independent outputs. Devices such as 2:8 buffers offer a mux on the front end, allowing the 8 replicated outputs to be sourced from 1 of 2 inputs.

Gabe, how would the signal integrity be affected in either case.

Hi Hithesh,

In both cases, signal integrity would be affected in the same manner internally. Specifications for additive jitter, prop. delay, signaling levels, etc., are dependent on the device selected.
