Suggestion to replace 555 timer

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: NE555

I am utilizing an NE555P to pulse a coil at 70 Hz using a wall plug ac/dc 9VDC/350mA.  Current is sinked via a 2N3904 transistor with flyback protection.  This set up works like a champ.  To increase the current, I went to a 12VDC/3A plug and it overheated the 555 timer and cooked it without overheating any of the other components over a 20 min. time period.

Can you suggest a pre-constructed circuit or combination that can pulse dc current which includes the frequency range of 10-100Hz+.  The objective is to pulse a coil or multiple coils in series, to generate maximum emf at various frequencies.
