LMX2581 output Odd harmonics frequency

When I use lmx2581 output frequency,but it  also output  Odd harmonics frequency.

for example,set it output frequency is 400MHz(-5.6dBm),it also output  Third harmonic 1200MHz(-14.6dBm). Why this is?

    Hi,

    Thank you for your interest in LMX2581. The output on this device are differential open collector style with an external resistor for biasing. They are not designed to provide a high spectral purity signal. 2nd and 3 rd harmonic will be found as a result of distortion on the output. The 3rd harmonic you are talking about about is due largely to some form of saturation or clipping on the output.

    If you need better spectral purity,  I would consider filtering.
