WEBENCH® Tools/LMX2595: FMCW chirp with exact timing and frequency setting

Part Number: LMX2595
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMX2492

Tool/software: WEBENCH® Design Tools

Hello,

I am using the TI CS Pro software to define and modify the settings for the LMX2595. Due to the internal frequency doubler the RFoutA output is delivering the 15.4-15.7GHz coming from the core VCO1.

The output RFoutB was configured to deliver the VCO1 frequencies divided by 8 (1.925GHz...1.9625GHz). This signal allows to be tested by an 4GHz 20GSa/s oscilloscope.

The problem is that the quality of the FMCW ramp needs to be checked. That means the chirp time and linearity should exact keep our requirements. Unfortunately we've got time lengths of 32.6µs or 22.22µs for the 100µs defined 'Desired Duration'. Is there a possibility to get every time the exact  'Desired Duration' for the ramp up or ramp down time?

Beside this I've used the MUXout signal from the LMX2595 Evalboard to get the lock detect from the PLL. This signal has triggered the oscilloscope. During the automatic ramping the lock detect occurs somewhere in the middle of the time of the up or down ramp. Later on it can be difficult to find the exact start and stop of the chirp signal. Does the LMX2595 support this start/stop identification in the automatic ramping mode?

Best regards

Dirk.

  • Hi Dirk,

Because of VCO calibration is needed during ramp, the actual ramp time will be longer than the desired ramp time. In other words, it is not a linear ramp.
LMX2595 does not provide feedback signal on start/stop ramp.
If you can use external VCO, please consider LMX2492, this device supports linear ramp and start/stop ramp indicator.
