LMX2571EVM: Registers not Loading from USB2ANY onto EVM

Part Number: LMX2571EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: USB2ANY, CODELOADER, LMX2581, LMX2571

One of my customers is having an issue where it won't accept the default registers or the ones in Figure 3 of the user guide. It seems to be outputting a random frequency and the phase lock LED is not on. Is there any additional information you need to help fix this issue?

Thanks

  • Matt,

Tell me where you get stuck:

    Step 1: Communicate with USB2ANY
    1. Load TICSPro software from ti.com. Instructions show CodeLoader, but that is outdated.
    2. Plug in USB2ANY. TICSPro should indicate USB2ANY is connected
    3. Go to USB Communications-> USB2ANY-> Identify, you should blink the light on the USB2ANY

    Step 2: Communicate with board
    1. Hook up board
    2. Load registers
    3. On the User Controls tab, toggle the POWERDOWN bit. You should be able to predictably make the current change to the EVM.

    Step 3: Lock the PLL
    1. Load Default mode in TICSPro
    2. Push Ctrl+L to load registers
    3. If no carrier and no lock detect indication, check the input reference, there should be 20 MHz XO on board, but ensure that this is running

  • 20MHz reference looks fine.  This morning I tried toggling the power up/down bit and it seems to work fine.  Changing it to ‘power down’ causes an immediate reduction in input current and changing it to ‘power up’ causes the current to increase although only after executing ‘load device’.  So after trying the power up/down experiment, I believe I have done everything suggested.

The GUI does not match the picture in the user’ guide.  The default mode outputs 2.7053 or 2.7083 sometimes (this change seems sporadic) and it does not change when I experiment with inputs on GUI so I don’t think it is locked at all.  (LED does not show lock, although user’s guide says this LED only works “when it feels like it”.)  Note that the signal level around 550MHz is slightly stronger than the signal at 2700MHz which appears to just be a harmonic so I don’t think the VCO is anywhere near the programmed frequency.  The default mode in the GUI pix in users guide shows 3/18/2015 whereas the default mode in my version shows 11/9/2014 and the settings do not match at all.  I am still poking around with the inputs to see if some other combination of input variables will make it lock but it would be nice to have a default mode which operates properly so I could start with a known good baseline.

  • The GUI does not show the output divider in the PLL tab block diagram like it does in the IC datasheet and in the eval board users guide. It also appears to be for a LMX2581, not LMX2571. I rechecked the TI site and this is the software from the LMX2771EVM page but it seems to be the incorrect file.
  • Timothy,

    1. 20 MHz input looks good. OK
    2. You are able to program the device and get it to respond to basic (powerup/powerdown) commands. Serial Interface is working.
    3. EVM instructions are outdated. You should be using TICSPro for LMX2571 now. I looked at them and it looked like it said "LMX2571" there, so I'm not sure which picture you are pulling from. Seems believable though, as it was probably started off the LMX2581 EVM instructions and a cut/paste error is very possible.
    4. LED on LMX2571 board might not be good. For these older larger LEDs, they did not always light up, although pressing on the LED with your fingernail would sometimes make it work. We switched on later boards to a more reliable LED.
    5. I'm not sure how the LMX2581 got mixed in, but 2700 MHz shoulds like this is the default setting for the LMX2581. In TICSPro, go to PLL+VCO and choose the LMX2571. It should say LMX2571 on top of the PLL tab.
    6. On my TICSPro, default version is still 2015-3-18

In summary, I'm pretty sure that you are trying to run the LMX2571 with the LMX2581 software. I checked and default mode "Default Mode 2014-11-09" is actually for the LMX2581. Also you mention something about the LMX2581.

    So to choose LMX2571 go Select Device-> PLL/VCO-> LMX2571
TICSPro runs all LMX and LMK devices so you have to select the device first; we don't make separate software versions for each device.
