Jitter estimation using PLLatinum sim

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LMX2594

Hi,

Iam using PLLatinum sim to calculate LPF values in PLL. The jitter mentioned in GUI  there is what kind of jitter. Is it period jitter or, rms jitter, total jitter., etc. Please advise

Also, I downloaded Loop filter calculator to calculate LPF component values but it is not showing/ does not populate  Actual loop BW and Phase Margin in the GUI. In the earlier version of the software it used to show. Can you please advise what I should too.

  • Hi Pankaj,

Which GUI and part are you referring to?
  • Hi Noel,

I am referring to PLLatinum sim. The output max frequency is 15 GHZ for the VCO in PLLatinum sim. I am working on a 14GHZ PLL and 28GHZ PLL. I can get the jitter estimate up to 15 GHZ for VCO but for 28 GHZ PLL clock, how do I estimate the jitter. Is my question clear.

The other tool I am referring to is Loop filter calculator for PLL. where in we enter values like , BW (Is it Loop bandwidth), FIN, FOUT, R, Icp, KVCO and it spits out the LPF component values along with Actual : BW and Phase Margin

The tool is not functioning properly, It dos not show the plots or the actal values like BW and PM.

  • Hi Pankaj,

I am not familiar with loop filter calculator, PLL Sim is what we are actively using simulation tool.
Although PLL Sim is part specific, you can overwrite the pull-down menu and type in the value directly.
If your goal is to calculate the loop filter value, you can pick any part and then modify the loop parameters manually.
For examples, if the max. Kpd in the pull-down menu is 2.4mA. You can replace it by typing 10(mA).
  • Can I put the VCO output frequency as 28 GHZ for SERDES PLL in the PLLatinum sim software as the maximum VCO value Limit in tool is 15GHZ. Also, if not possible to put VCO output frequency as 28 GHZ then how do you calculate jitter for 28GHZ PLL clock. Do you have any tool for calculating jitter at 28GHZ PLL clock frequency.
  • Pankaj,

Yes, you can put whatever VCO frequency you like. There is no 15 GHz maximum VCO limit.
If you choose the LMX2594 and tell you the VCO frequency is above 15 GHz, it will let you, but flag it red because the part cannot do this, but that's the part, not the tool that is limiting.

Try the "custom" part and you can enter whatever you like.
