LMK04832: Using VCO with PLL1 of LMK04832

Part Number: LMK04832

Dear all, I'm trying to design a LMK04832 based clock generator, the external reference frequency range is 120~150 MHz , is it possiable to use a VCO  with the first stage PLL to achive a flexibile clocking scheme?

  • Hello Gan,

PLL1 is not a great standalone PLL, it is useful for providing a low phase noise reference to PLL2 when the reference is dirty or the phase detector frequency cannot be very high. If your external reference has low phase noise, it makes more sense to use PLL2 as a standalone PLL, since PLL2 has two integrated VCOs and the option to use external VCO for flexible clocking. PLL2 also has access to the clock distribution dividers, whereas PLL1 requires external connection to distribute the output.

I suggest using PLL2, with either the internal VCOs or an external VCO, to achieve a flexible clocking scheme.

    Regards,
