TINA/Spice/NE555: 555 timer for 24V,2A Back-up for short duration(300ms)

Part Number: NE555
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TINA-TI, , TPS55340

Tool/software: TINA-TI or Spice Models

Hi,

I have an application where Input is 24V from the SMPS and given to the Load which consumes 24V,2A.

When in case of Power outage, I need to have a back-up/Delay the output  for extra 300-350ms.

As of now I thought to go with Power back-up Management IC I just want to check with 555 Timer is it possible to achieve without the Back-up IC.( I presume it's difficult, Since the max Voltage that 555 supports 18V).

Thanks.

  • Hello Lakshminarayana,

I'll repeat what I read and understood. "If input 24V fails (drops below a certain voltage) then something will happen. Let me know which thing is the one you want.

1A, 1B Output of timer circuit would go high for 325ms or alternatively the output would go low for 325ms then pulse would end.

2A, 2B Output of timer circuit could wait for 325ms doing "nothing" then go high or low after that delay.

    3 Something different than above.

Other than the 24V input, what power source are available to use?

What are the desired voltage output low and output high voltage?

At what voltage should the 24V input trigger the power out event?

  • Hi,

If 24V Fails meaning when complete shut off, I need back-up up-to 350ms.

    Desired Voltage is 24V.

  • Lakshminarayana,

I suggest storing the 24V in a large capacitance then using a boost converter to transfer the energy in the capacitor to make a 24V, 2A supply that lasts for at least 350ms. The NE555 is not a part of this solution.

TPS55340 may be a viable boost for this. Start a new thread with this part number and ask for "capacitor to 24V 2A for 350ms backup"

  • Yeah I agree with you.

Ideal solution would be through the Supercaps.

I just wanted to check whether it's possible through the 555 Timer.

    Thanks for the clarification.
