CDC-CDCM7005-CALC: gain peaking for loop stability

Part Number: CDC-CDCM7005-CALC

Hello,

in CDC-CDCM7005-CALC, there is a parameter, Gain peaking. For considering loop stability, I think we can check phase margin typically, like phase margin has 60dB or like that.

Does gain peaking affect to loop stability or any other parameter?

There is a number gain peaking is less than 0.5dB but we are not sure where this number comes from.

Would you let us know what is gain peaking we need to check and what gain peaking number is good for design.

Best regards,

Toshihiro Watanabe

  • Hi Toshihiro,

Gain peaking is observed in the closed loop transfer curve and appears as a peak in the curve. Signals with frequency near the gain peaking will be amplified, which can have a detrimental effect on signal integrity. It is related to the loop filter configuration, therefore it is related to loop stability.

Therefore, gain peaking should be constrained in the loop filter design. Constraining to 0.5dB should suffice for your application. Even 3dB could suffice, but may decrease random jitter performance.

    Kind regards,
    Lane
