LMX2595: Using dual outputs (RFoutA and RFoutB) simultaneously

Part Number: LMX2595

Hi Team,

We have a customer inquiry regarding the operation of  LMX2595 20-GHz synths for a LO engine:

1) Is it possible to use different outputs simultaneously? In other words, can RFoutA and RFoutB be switched on simultaneously? Have you heard of any issues with overheating?
2) If question #1 is possible, how will the output power level be effected for the two outputs? Will there be any additional drop in power beyond 3 dB? Do you have any output power data for simultaneous-output operation?
3) It appears that there is only one control signal for the programmable output power. Does this mean that the gain of the two output amps cannot be controlled independently (assuming that the variable output power is due to them being VGAs).
4) Just to confirm, the frequency range of the VCO is 8-15 GHz? And the frequency range of the doubler is 15-20 GHz?

Please let me know if you need more information from our customer.

Thanks!

Jonathan

  • Hi Jonathan,

    1. it is possible, both outputs can be turn on simultaneously.

    2. With the same power setting, the output power of the two outputs are not exactly the same. This is due to the chip layout as well as process variation. Unfortunately, we don't have the power imbalance data.

    3. Output power of each output can be independently adjusted. OUTA_PWR and OUTB_PWR set their output power.

    4. VCO frequencies are 7.5 - 15GHz. With VCO doubler enabled, output freq are up to 20GHz.
