I think coaxial is fine, we did it all the time. If the input power to the mixer is important, make the cable as short as possible or use SMA I-join connector.

it neither works with coaxial cables nor with coaxial adapters 

as soon as I apply the signal from the VCO (LMX2595EVM), the power supplies for said two devices tell me that they are not supplied with 5V anymore and that they draw too much current

I do not understand your question.

Do you have problem with the power supply to the boards or you did not get signal out from LMX2595EVM + mixer/multiplier?

as soon as I initialise the  LMX2595EVM the power supply for the two AD devices (datasheets above) tells me that they draw too much current (while the voltage level coming in from the supply is dropping to 0 or close to 0)

the same happens when using a different synthesizer operating on 5 V 

I switched everything off immediately, so ...  I intend to use the mixer to downconvert the frequency from the VCO for my spectrum analyser 

 when remaining at lower frequencies (low enough for my spectrum analyser and without multiplier ) the results are excellent

I didn't apply 5V to the EVM. 

Let me recall though 

You are saying the LMX2695EVM operating on 3.3 V can be connected to the above  mentioned mixer and multiplier (operating on 5V) without causing power issues? Both via coaxial connectors and via waveguide?  Is this correct?
